T1 / Dedicated Line Services
High speed voice and data lines may save you money

Dedicated line services offer considerable cost savings for businesses needing many phone lines, or a combination of telephone and Internet services.

T1 is the most popular of the T or "trunk" services. It is a digital line that is supplied on two pairs of ordinary telephone wire. T1 lines can accommodate up to 24 separate telephone calls or a combination of telephone calls and Internet data on a single line. It is called "dedicated" service because it is always connected and dedicated to your business needs.

T1 lines run at 1.544 Mbps and cost from about $400 and up, depending on your location. The price depends on distance from the carrier's POP or Point of Presence. Unlike DSL and Cable Modem service, T1 line are generally available in rural, suburban and urban areas alike. They can be ordered with a service level agreement that guarantees reliable service for your business needs.

If your company is using 8 or more telephone lines (actual lines, not just phone numbers) and/ or needs Internet service for multiple employees, then T1 service may save you money over a combination of switched phone service and DSL Internet access. If you are running a call center or want caller ID on your incoming phone calls, then you'll need a variation of T1 service called PRI or Primary Rate Interface. That gives you 23 phone lines plus Caller ID for all of those lines on a singe T1 line.

To use T1 for telephone service, you'll need a Key Telephone or PBX system that has a T1 or PRI interface built-in or available as an add-on feature.

When your company needs more capacity, it is generally easy to combine or "bond" multiple T1 lines to double or triple the bandwidth available. Beyond that, you can upgrade to T3 lines or Optical Carrier service.
